The best city and beach break combos

by - 06:04

The sun seems like the perfect way to cure my wine-head from the night before, but my inner thoughts of "walking makes you tan more" encourages me to walk around the city. Unlike my friends, I cannot spend the entire day sitting by the pool without saying "guys I'm bored and I'm restless" like a toddler. The beach seems so appealing to me, right now, from my dull living room. In fact, anywhere seems appealing to me than being stuck with a load of uni work. However, realistically, as soon as I get to the beach I want to go on a big sightseeing walk. I have come up with a list of places that I have been, or places that I want to go that would mean I get the best of a beach holiday and also the best of a city break.

1. Barcelona, Spain
Basing this on personal experience, Barcelona is home to a very vibrant beach with lots of shops, bars and restaurants. Not too far from the main strip, which is definitely a bonus as that's where majority of hotels and hostels are. However, a lot of people visit Barcelona on a city break and visit all the tourist attractions such as Park Guell. Barcelona is an obvious choice for a bit of beach and a bit of sight, but that definitely doesn't make it any less fun! Oh, and if it helps merge it all together, there are even some nightclubs on the beach.

2. Sydney, Australia

Australia is home to some of the most amazing beaches and some of the most amazing monuments. I visited Sydney 10 years ago and has the most beautiful golden beach but also has sights such as the Opera House (don't climb the stairs if you're as unfit as me, they are never ending!) and the Harbour Bridge. It might be pretty pricey if you're flying from the UK, but it's worth it if you want to visit some good nightlife followed by curing your wine-head the next day with some beautiful sunshine, Sydney is your place to go.

3. Dubrovnik, Croatia

Unfortunately I haven't been here, but it was on my to-do list this year until I decided to book 6 weeks in Asia. You can admire the medieval walls and towers from the sandy white beaches, which makes it that little bit more unique. A stroll along the city walls which are surrounding the beach will make you feel like you are in an episode of Game of Thrones. Perhaps next year I will be able to visit.

4. Lisbon, Portugal
Ah, Portugal's capital city is the perfect beach and city combination. With heats that hit above 30 degrees, you are sure to catch a nice summer glow. Pink Street, which features some of the amazing shops and nightlife is only a half an hour taxi from the beach. Your best bet is to get a hotel somewhere in the middle, so it decreases the walking distance from both the beach and the city.

5. Cannes, France
You are probably familiar to Cannes from their annual film festivals, but I can assure you that there is much more to the vibrant city than a weekend of independent films. Why not take a stroll to the streets of La Suquet to visit the castle, or visit the dozens of charming little bistros along Rue Saint Antoine and Rue du Suquet. Oh, and as for the beach, Cannes is home to some private and public beaches. A lot of the private beaches are owned by the luxury hotels along the coastline, but some let non-guests in for a small fee.

6. Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Dubai might seem a far way to go for a city break, but if you manage to get yourself an overnight flight, you'll be there in a flash. Your best bet is to pre-book some activities before you go, to avoid queues. Why not take a helicopter tour so that you can get a view of the emirate and then perhaps a city tour through gold and spice souks and the more modern Palm Jumeirah and Burj Al Arab. If you're like me, and love a good shop, don't forget that making purchases in Dubai will be tax free, so you're likely to get a good bargain. As for the beaches, they're probably better to avoid in the heat of summer, as it reaches heights of 45 degrees. There are great public options at the likes of Mamzer Beach Park or the Open Beach – popular with early morning joggers.
