My hand luggage essentials

by - 05:41

With such a small luggage allowance on a lot of flights these days, it is important that you only travel with the most important things available to access. I usually opt for a big-ish bag that will hold all of my stuff - often a tote bag or a rucksack that you would probably take to town shopping. The good thing about a rucksack is that there are usually different pockets to put everything in so you never lose your phone at the bottom of your back and you don't hold up the queue hunting for your passport.

Travel Documents

Let's get through the boring things to carry first, your travel documents. It is important to keep these in a little organised folder so that you always know where they are. You never know when you may need them. I place them in the order that I need them, well, I always keep my passport and boarding pass at the front and then the rest somewhere at the back.

  • Passport - obviously, you won't be able to go very far without it.
  • Boarding pass - again, don't expect to fly anywhere without a boarding pass.
  • Travel insurance - you may think that because you've bought it you will be fine, but it is super handy to have all of your details to hand in case of any flight delays or cancellation.
  • Info on where you are staying - This is so that you can hand it to cab drivers or information points once you hand and they can give you the best way to get to your location.
Body and Health
Nobody wants to sit next to someone who smells like BO and has smelly breath, so let's try and avoid this happening. If you're on a long haul flight then some things like deodorant and toothbrushes are absolutely essential.
  • Toothbrush - you'll be eating a lot of sweets and chocolate to keep you going I can assure you, so definitely grab a toothbrush for the flight to wash away the sugar.
  • Deodorant - everyone feels a little grimey when they get off the flight and honestly, deodorant is an absolute lifesaver when you're flying. Just ensure that is isn't bigger than 100ml or it will get taken off you.
  • Face wipes - again, your makeup will probably melt off with the heat on the flight, so take these with you so that you can restart your face in the air. Plus, it'll be a nice way to kill 20 minutes or so.
  • Hand lotion - airplanes tend to dry us out too, so pack some hand lotion to keep your hands nourished.

There is nothing worse than being bored on a flight. Especially if you're a lot like me and get bored within 5 minutes of taking off. Make sure you have a lot of these to keep you going!
  • Books/Kindle - I have just invested in a Kindle because there is no way that I can carry enough books to last me 6 weeks without it massively weighing down my bag. I usually tend to take 2 books on a flight just incase my first one isn't as good as I had hoped.
  • Magazines - nothing like grabbing the weekly edition of Heat before your flight to engage in some weekly celeb goss from celebrities you barely even know.
  • Travel Monopoly - this was on my Christmas list this year and I had blogged about using it on my trip to Vegas. Annoyingly, the little bits do fall everywhere especially if there is turbulence. you're right, maybe connect 4 will be better.
I personally have never had my luggage lost, but I know people that have and I cannot think of anything to ruin a holiday more so best to keep your valuables with you at all times.
  • All of your money and cards - keep some cash in your case but not too much, it is definitely best to keep it where you can see it.
  • Important jewellery - that's if you travel with your jewellery, I know that I wouldn't take any of my important stuff away with me in the first place but if I had to to either wear it or pack it somewhere safe.
  •  Important clothes - If you have an 'I can't go on holiday without that' outfit, then absolutely pack it. It would be just your luck that your case will go missing for a few hours and your favourite top will be on a completely different flight.
